About Us
Ethnic Studies is an interdisciplinary program that examines the histories and cultures of various ethnic groups in the United States. The program investigates the development of communities in local, national, and global contexts and analyzes the cultural and political factors that have influenced these processes and how they have shaped the social interactions of people in the U.S.
Global Classroom
The introduction to Ethnic Studies is often taught in the Global Classroom. This course offers a unique opportunity for ECU students to learn about other cultures in a face-to-face environment without having to leave their classroom.
ECU students the opportunity to communicate with students in different countries live time. The cultural exchange is based both on written communications between a pair of students (via ‘chatting’ and outside communication) as well as through video-streamed face-to-face dialogue.
ECU students connect consecutively with students from three different universities for 4-5 weeks each. In the past, we have connected with Peru, Egypt, Algeria, The Gambia, Nigeria, Pakistan, India, Spain, Mexico, Poland, Ukraine, and Russia. New world partners are added every year!
Distance Education
Ethnic Studies offers classes on campus and DE classes as well. Online learning is ideal for those who are concerned about balancing the rigors of an academic workload with full-time employment or family obligations. Our Ethnic Studies DE classes allow students to access their coursework twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Online courses are taught by the same faculty that teach on-campus courses. The level of coursework, required readings, and examinations are the same for online and on-campus courses. Programs are designed with the student in mind, and the instruction is focused on active participation and academic success.
